Family home evening · 45 minutes · Free

A family home evening your kids will actually ask for

Turn your living room into the mission field. Here is a complete, ready-to-run FHE plan built around Missionary Dash, a free, family-friendly missionary game.

The plan (about 45 minutes)

  1. Opening (5 min). Sing a favorite missionary song and say an opening prayer.
  2. The mission call (5 min). Open Missionary Dash on the TV. Have someone read President Thatcher's briefing out loud in their most dramatic voice. Name the four missionaries after members of your family.
  3. Hand out roles.
    • Driver taps the choices (rotate every landmark).
    • Quartermaster watches snacks, white shirts and bike parts.
    • Navigator checks the map and counts blocks to the next stop.
    • Morale officer keeps an eye on everyone's health and calls for a rest day.
    • Little ones are in charge of spotting the seagull.
  4. Play (20–30 min). Vote on every big decision as a family. Most families can finish a run in one evening.
  5. Talk about it (5–10 min). Use a couple of the questions below.
  6. Treat and closing prayer.

Discussion questions

  • Brother Openshaw asked for help with his piano, even though it slowed the missionaries down. What would you have chosen? Why does the game reward helping?
  • Vern had a "No Soliciting" sign, and the kindest choice was simply to wave. How can we be kind to people who don't want what we're offering?
  • The district had to share snacks and look after each other's health. Who in our family or ward could use a little looking after this week?
  • Missionaries do a lot of ordinary, unglamorous things: laundry, bike repairs, getting lost. What ordinary things can our family do this week that matter?

Treat ideas from the trail

  • Lemonade, sold at a stand for 25¢ to anyone wearing a name tag.
  • Funeral potatoes, which the game insists count as a snack.
  • Green Jell-O, carrots optional, at your own risk.
  • Rocket pops, in honor of the ice cream truck.

Family challenge

Like the district, do one act of service for a neighbor this week, then report back at next week's FHE.

Tips for young kids

Read the dialogue out loud in silly voices; Gordon the seagull deserves one. Let the youngest pick each missionary's helmet color on the character screen. If health gets low, celebrate the rest day. Nobody is ever really hurt in this game; worst case, a missionary gets transferred to Boise, which is fine.
